About Tax Free Life

Who we are, how we check our information, and where it comes from

Tax Free Life is a free, independent information resource for UK consumers. It explains, in plain English, how inheritance tax can affect a life insurance payout, and the simple steps (like writing a policy in trust) that can help keep that money in your family's hands.

Who runs it

The site is run by an independent individual in the UK, not a company, insurer, broker or advice firm. We are not financial advisers, and we do not sell, arrange or recommend any product. The aim is simply to make a confusing corner of personal finance easier to understand, and to encourage people to get proper advice before acting.

How we research and check our information

We aim to be accurate, current and clearly sourced. Our approach is:

  • We rely on official and reputable sources. For tax and legal points, we use UK government guidance (GOV.UK and HMRC) and the Information Commissioner's Office. For market and industry information, we draw on bodies such as the Financial Conduct Authority and the Association of British Insurers, and established financial press.
  • We date our figures. Tax thresholds and rules change. Where we quote figures (such as the £325,000 nil-rate band or the April 2027 pension changes), we state that they reflect the rules at the time of writing.
  • Our news stories credit their source. Each news article links to the original reporting it is based on, so you can read the primary source yourself.
  • We separate general information from your personal position. Tools like our tax checker are simple illustrations that use standard assumptions. They are not personal calculations, and we say so on screen.
Nothing on this site is financial, tax or legal advice, or a personal recommendation. Tax depends on your own circumstances and can change. Always speak to a qualified, FCA-regulated adviser or a solicitor before making a decision.

Our independence

We do not sell insurance, arrange policies, or introduce customers to providers or advisers for reward. We do not take paid placements, and no company can pay to be featured or recommended here. When we point you toward finding an adviser, we direct you to independent, official directories rather than to any particular firm.

Keeping it accurate

We review our guides periodically and update them when the rules change. If you spot something that looks out of date or incorrect, please tell us through our contact page and we will look into it. We would rather fix an error quickly than leave it standing.

Your privacy

The contact and news-alert forms are optional. If you use them, we only use your details to reply or to send the updates you asked for, and we never sell or share them. You can read the full privacy and cookie policy for details, including how to opt out of analytics.

Information only. This is general information, not financial, tax or legal advice, and not a personal recommendation. Tax rules depend on your circumstances and can change. Please speak to a qualified, FCA-regulated adviser or a solicitor before acting.
